Biography

Hüseyin Özgürgün was born in 1965 in Lefkoşa. He graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences in 1988. He received English Literature and Administrative Science education in Clare College, Cambridge University. He served as national sportsman and sports administrator in various sports clubs. At 1998 and 2003 General Elections and at 2005 Early General Elections he was elected as National Unity Party (UBP) MP for Lefkoşa. During the years 2004-2009 he served as a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. In 2006, he was elected as the leader of the UBP and performed this duty for almost a year. Özgürgün, who was re-elected as a Lefkoşa MP in the 2009 Early General Elections, served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the new cabinet.

He was elected as an MP for Lefkoşa from the UBP in the early general elections on 28 July 2013.

On 31 August 2013, he became the leader of his party for the second time.

He is married and has two children.
